The 25th EVE Blog Banter: Alliances and sovereignty

20110228
Welcome to the twenty-fifth installment of the EVE Blog Banter, the monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter involves an enthusiastic group of gaming bloggers, a common topic within the realm of EVE Online, and a week or so to post articles pertaining to the said topic. The resulting articles can either be short or quite extensive, either funny or dead serious, but are always a great fun to read! Any questions about the EVE Blog Banter should be directed to crazykinux@gmail.com. Check for other EVE Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post!

This month's topic comes to us from @Tetraetc - "Tetra's EVE Blog" - who asks: "Have Alliances and the sovereignty system limited the amount of PVP and RP potential in Null sec? Imagine a Null Sec where anyone could build outposts wherever. Would the reduction of the alliance game mechanic, and the removal of the sovereignty game mechanics (or the modifcation of it from Alliance level to Corp level for that matter) force more PVP into Null sec, or would giant power blocs like the NC still form themselves?"
If the sovereignty mechanics of the game changed to allow corporations to claim space on their own you would think that you would encounter far more individual corporation claims to space. I don't believe this would happen though. Perhaps instead the corporations would grow much larger and become what the current alliances are now. The role of the alliance would become the equivalent of the current coalitions. Would the current CEO's want to give up their rights though? Perhaps not. The current power blocs may not be the same as they are currently but they would most certainly still exist. People like the protection of large numbers, the game mechanics may change but there would be another way found that brings people together under one large banner.

While I don't believe we would see much of a change in the large groups that form under a good leadership. I believe that if CCP forcibly destroyed the large coalitions then PvP would have to change with it. PvP right now is happening in large numbers all over null sec. I would say that there is more PvP in null sec than in low sec, it's just they are different types. Not everybody wants the same experience out of their PvP encounters.

I know players who only want to participate in what is commonly called 'blob' warfare where they are protected by numbers and perhaps like to feel a part of the larger whole, like a platoon of soldiers in the battlefield. Others prefer the blob warfare type as it enables them to focus on other matters while participating. More still like getting easy kills to plaster on their killboards and in this type of PvP you will get many, many kills.
The other type of PvP is the hunt, or 'small gang' warfare. This is my preferred type of PvP. Many would disagree, however I would say a gang of up to ten pilots would constitute one of these fleets. Roaming through various systems, constellations and even Regions looking for a target. Sometimes you find prey, sometimes not. Sometimes you find a bigger hunter.

If a corporation was allowed to stake a sovereignty claim and we saw and increase if smaller groups starting to lay claim to areas that were once under the domain of the power blocs we would start to see the come back and dominance of the small gang warfare. The hunt would once more be on.

Well, I can wish anyway.
